How to Score a Job on Campus

A job on campus can be one of the most beneficial things you can have while going to schoool. Not only does it save you time and gas from commuting, it also allows you to build a closer relationship with the school. You meet amazing staff, wonderful student co-workers, and build your work experience for future jobs.

In order to score a job on campus, you must first do your research on which department is hiring. Career services will normally have a post on their website of which department is hiring so look there first. The SDSU Human Resources department is another website where you can get information on departments looking for student workers.

Once you know where you want to work, apply as soon as possible. It is important for you to submit the necessary materials to the department. Some of these include a cover letter, resume, and general application. You want your application to leave a positive impression with your potential employer. Your goal is to land that first interview. Complete these steps properly and you’ll be one step closer to the job.

After you get the message asking you when you’re free to do an interview, you’re almost at the home stretch. Choose a time that allows you to have enough time to properly get ready and arrive at least fifteen minutes early. Once you get in the door, start your interview with a nice firm handshake, respond to the questions with honest answers, state your enthusiasm in working at school, and don’t forget to smile after every answer.
