National Student Day

Yet another school year begins here at San Diego State University (SDSU). With that brings the rush of new students discovering the many clubs and organizations, and deciding what they want to do with the now seemingly countless hours in their day. It is also a great time for our Student Organizations on campus. As the new school year starts up, so does the countdown to National Student Day on October 4th, 2012! According to the National Student Day website, the goal is “to celebrate social responsibility by college students across North America.” Here at San DiegoStateUniversity we want to recognize and celebrate those students who go out and volunteer by beautifying, improving, supporting, and making the community a better place for others.

So how does it work? Starting in September, after you complete a community service event you can come to our office (Student Life & Leadership, Student Services West 1661) and fill out the Community Service Tracking Form. Simply check “YES” in the grey box in the top right corner to enter into the National Student Day competition. Students can compete as individuals or as a group. It is completely free and you can win awesome prizes!  It is such an easy way for you to be recognized for doing volunteer work through your fraternity, sorority, major, or club. There are over $2,000 dollars in prizes up for grabs; some of the prizes include a free semester of textbooks and a $1,0000 gift card to the Bookstore. All prizes are listed here: This is a great way to serve the community while you meet and interact with other members of the organization that you are involved with.

So when should I start? We start accepting community service hours for National Student Day on September 1st.  A great way to kick-off getting those service hours is by attending Constitution Day on September 17th. It is a fun scavenger hunt activity and you can earn up to an hour in community service. We stop accepting community service hours for National Student Day on September 28th, but we will still track your community service hours throughout the year. Here is a list of all the opportunities to serve in San Diego:

So what do you do now? Get out there and serve! Fly solo or gather some friends, roommates, family, and give back to the community that you call home. Be sure to attend the National Student Day party in the Bookstore on October 4th, 2012 from 1:00pm to 1:30pm where the awards will be given out, along with food, refreshments, and discounts on clothing and items all day. So as we head into September, remember to serve by yourself or with friends and let us thank you for all the work that you do.
