Get Out and Rock the Vote!

Romney. Obama. Romney. Obama.

We’ve all heard these two names being thrown around on every news channel. They have even found their way to be on the coffee cups at 7-11. As fall arrives, it brings with it Pumpkin Spiced Lattes and the November Election.

Many issues are at the forefront of this election, including healthcare, national debt, taxes, energy & environment, education, and the economy. All of these issues directly affect us 20-something soon to be college graduates. This younger generation can and should have a massive impact on the outcome of this election. Rock the Vote is an organization that dedicates its resources to influencing younger voters to get out and vote.

Founded 21 years ago, Rock the Vote combines pop culture and politics to get the millennial generation motivated and wanting to take action. Over their existence, they have registered more than 5 million young people to vote and have become a trusted source of information for the young people about registering and casting a ballot. The millennial generation makes up about 25% of the electorate for 2012. Rock the Vote is dedicated to building up the younger voter’s political power and thus urging politicians to pay attention to issues that matter to us young voters. And candidates have responded.

SDSU has worked to aid the efforts of Rock the Vote. Last Tuesday, A.S. held National Voter Registration Day to get college students registered to vote. They also have a list of upcoming events to motivate students to get out and Rock the Vote. Rock the Vote events are free and open to the public, and include:

  • October, 22nd: LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE!!
  • Noon, Oct. 31, Hepner Hall: Student issues debate featuring Aztecs for Obama, Aztec Debate Team, and College Republicans.
  • Noon, Nov. 1, Hepner Hall: Student rally featuring student organizations and performers that will focus on budget cuts, the tax initiative and the importance of voting.
  • Nov. 5: Pre-Election Day celebration featuring a musical performance. More details will be available via the A.S. Facebook and Twitter profiles.
  • 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., Nov. 6, PPG Alumni Center: Election Day poll site at the PPGAlumniCenter.

Associated Students has worked hard to get students registered and motivated. I also highly suggest getting to know the candidates and really educating yourself on what is being voted on. (Did you know there are other presidential candidates too? Click here for ALL of the presidential candidates!) We are getting to the age where government decisions will affect us directly. I’m not telling you who to vote for, I’m just telling you to get out there and Rock the Vote on November 6.
