Office hours are just as mysterious to new and continuing students as seeing a double rainbow. You know they exist but you can’t believe it’s real. They are the most underutilized tool for the majority of college students. Not only can they make you a better student with a greater understanding of the material but done correctly they can be beneficial in the future. Here are a couple reasons why you should attend your professor’s office hours.
1. If you received a bad grade or had some questions on the homework or test, office hours are the time to get those answered. There might even be an opportunity to receive some points back on an assignment or test just for taking the initiative to go in and talk to your instructor.
2. It’s important to get to know your instructors and their teaching methods. Getting to know a professor can build a connection that can lead to excellent letters of recommendation and possibly an internship or job after you graduate.
There are a few things to consider when attending office hours that will ensure a good first impression. Come prepared with questions in mind and a list of things that you would like to discuss. This will help both of you use your time to the fullest. And don’t forget to introduce yourself and say what class you are in!
